UC Campuses Travel Advisory – Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Region

Advisory Summary

The University of California Office of the President has issued a travel advisory for all UC campuses, effective October 20, 2023, regarding travel to the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

Due to escalating security risks from increased civil unrest and violence in the MENA region, the UC Office of the President strongly advises that all university-related travel to this area be limited to essential travel only.

Countries Affected

Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Palestinian Territories, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, Yemen

Travel Review Process

Travelers proposing travel to MENA destinations must complete a Travel Request Approval Form.

  • All travel to a MENA country will need to be reviewed by Department Chairs and Principal Officers/Supervisors to determine whether it is considered essential to research or is critical to the mission of the department or university.
  • A travel risk assessment of the itinerary will be performed, requiring that travelers receive a pre-travel informational briefing before departure.
