The Global Staff Exchange Program provides a unique professional development opportunity for UC Santa Cruz staff to learn from our global partners through a one to two-week exchange at one of our partner institutions. The exchange experience is designed to provide staff with the opportunity to share best practices and expertise, network, and acquire a more global perspective on university services, administration, and management.

Be prepared to identify the proposed dates for your visit along with the following:
- Statements of Intent
- Why are you interested in the UC Santa Cruz Global Staff Exchange Program at the specified university abroad? How will your participation enhance your professional development and growth?
- Explain the relevance of this opportunity to your current position and future service to campus internationalization efforts. How will your participation strengthen UC Santa Cruz’s partnership with the host institution and benefit both institutions?
- What are your objectives and the expected outcomes for this exchange?
- Supervisor’s Letter of Support. The letter should address the following:
- Supervisor’s support of your participation, including confirmation that you will continue to receive your regular salary for the duration of the program and commitment of financial support for travel expenses.
- How your unit will benefit from your participation.
Selection Process
Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee within Global Engagement, with the final selection determined by the Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education and Global Engagement and approved by the university partner abroad.
One UC Santa Cruz staff member will be selected per partner institution. Staff will be notified of their selection status by April 30, 2020.
Candidates will be reviewed and evaluated on the following criteria:
- Motivation: Clear and achievable objectives.
- Professional Development: Enhancing professional development and growth.
- Service: Relevance to one’s current position, future service to the campus, and benefit to the unit or division.
- Endorsement: Supervisor support, including benefit to the unit or division.
- Campus Internationalization: Strengthening UC Santa Cruz’s partnership with the partner institution and contributing to the internationalization of the campus.
Eligibility
Who: All UC Santa Cruz non-represented, exempt staff are eligible to apply to spend up to one week at the University of Sussex and up to 2 weeks at Aarhus University.
Objectives: Applicants must be able to clearly articulate how their participation in the exchange will support both their professional development and benefit campus internationalization efforts. Objectives for participation may include:
- Build capacity: acquire new skills or expertise, job shadow
- Research the capacity for and/or establish joint institutional initiatives
- Share best practices
- Gain new perspectives and knowledge about the culture and higher education system in both the host country and host institution.
Priority will be given to applicants who have not previously participated in a UC Santa Cruz Global Staff Exchange Program.
Deliverables
Who: All UC Santa Cruz non-represented, exempt staff are eligible to apply to spend up to one week at the University of Sussex and up to 2 weeks at Aarhus University.

Cost & Travel Grants
The cost of participation will be the joint responsibility of the home department/division of the participating staff member and the Division of Global Engagement (GE). GE will provide a travel grant of $1,000 for selected applicants. It is expected that staff will receive their regular salary from their department/division and that time spent participating in this program is equivalent to time spent working at UC Santa Cruz during the weeklong duration of the program. It is highly encouraged that home units provide professional development funding support to cover travel-related expenses, including:
- Airfare
- Transportation
- Accommodation
- Meals and Incidentals Per Diem
The estimated budget for the above expenses is likely to range from $1800-$2500, not including the travel grant allowance.
