Increasing experiential learning opportunities through Faculty-led Global Seminars

The faculty-led summer Global Seminar portfolio has grown from one program in 2017 to 16 programs currently, with 8 programs expected to run this summer 2023. Some programs run every other year.

In such a short timeframe, programs have spanned a wide range of disciplines including Agroecology, Art, Biology, Film & Digital Media, Literature, Writing, and more. Additionally, upcoming and past destinations include Costa Rica, Cuba, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Malawi, Morocco, South Africa, and Spain.

Global Seminars are courses taught by UC Santa Cruz instructors in a global setting, providing students with the unique opportunity to enhance classroom learning with excursions and cultural activities abroad. Students learn on-location, engaging with communities and cultures, often in non-English speaking countries.

Enrollments have grown from 13 in 2017, to 123 in summer 2022. It is anticipated that 150 students will be enrolled for summer 2023.

Leading a Global Seminar offers UCSC instructors the opportunity to provide students with an enriching international opportunity, leverage their own international experience, enhance their courses through international activities, and reinforce existing relationships with colleagues abroad.

Faculty interested in teaching a Global Seminar should stay tuned for the call to submit proposals this spring for programs that will run in summer 2025.

Providing Global Learning Opportunities for All through the development of Faculty-led Global Seminars is key to our Strategic Plan for Internationalization.
