International graduate students are invited to register for the fall 2019 Graduate Preparation Program. This four-week intensive non-credit program is open to current and newly admitted international graduate students.

The Graduate Preparation Program focuses on English for academic purposes (EAP), academic skills, and cultural orientation. Classes include oral communication, academic writing, and reading and research skills.

“The Graduate Preparation Program provides international graduate students with a strong foundation to the U.S. Classroom environment, the academic system at UCSC, and academic English needed to thrive at the Graduate level,” said International Programs Coordinator Victoria Hudak.

A key piece of the program is the preparation of graduate students for their role as teaching assistants. This program ensures that international teaching assistants have the language skills and support to succeed in the classroom, which will have an additional positive impact on undergraduate student success.

Throughout the program, students will acquire 75 classroom hours of instruction, including coursework on oral communication, academic writing, and reading and research skills. In addition to coursework, participants will be provided with course materials, on-campus activities, orientation, poster fair with refreshments, and an academic report for each student for their respective academic department.

The fall 2019 program will take place Tuesday, Aug. 27 through Wednesday, Sept. 18. Classes will take place on weekdays from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. with additional workshops, social activities, and the capstone project.

Temporary housing is available to participants for the duration of the program at The Village. This housing is optional; however, it is an excellent opportunity to get acquainted with the Santa Cruz area and look for academic year housing.

Registration is now open for the Graduate Preparation Program. Individuals interested in learning more or registering can visit global.ucsc.edu.
