Traveling abroad and representing UCSC overseas? It is important to register your trip in order to be covered by UC system insurance. Click for more information, recent safety guidance from the U.S. Department of State, and additional travel related resources.
Step one: Your destination
- Research specific country information, recent or current travel warnings and alerts, and passport and visa requirements at Travel.State.Gov
For additional information for individuals and families identifying as LGBTI see the U.S. Department of State: LGBTI Travel Information.
- Register for the U.S. Department of State: Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. This will allow you to receive the latest security alerts while traveling. You will also be automatically registered with the nearest consulate or embassy as a point-of-contact for you and your family members in the case of an emergency.
- Research vaccination, health, and wellness information for your destination at the Traveler’s Center of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
- Another helpful resource is the UC Trip Planner which provides location-specific reports on safety, health, climate, local transportation and more. Requires blue/gold log-in credentials.
Step two: Register your trip
- UCOP provides employees and students traveling on official university business with travel insurance. Register with UCOP Risk Services.
Additional note: If your travel reservations are made through the Connexxus system, registration in UC Travel Insurance is automatic unless you are flying on Southwest for Connexxus (Southwest Airlines) in which case registration is not automatic.
- The UC Global Operations (UCGO) website is a portal to information and resources to help facilitate your international activities, projects, and travel. This website offers UC faculty, staff and students answers to some of the fundamental questions and issues common to international work, with links to UC Office of the President (UCOP) and campus offices to help you with your specific concerns. Step three: Get ready for departure
- Make photocopies or digital images of your important documents including the photo page of your passport, related visa information, and any vaccinations required for your destination. Keep these copies in a safe and separate location from the originals.
- Don’t forget to inform your financial institution (bank and credit card) that you will be traveling overseas, and also make copies of important account information in case of problems. Keep these copies in a safe and separate location from the originals.
- Although most items are available abroad, you will want to consider any prescription medications, extra contact lenses and/or eye glasses, a high quality guide book, language dictionary or phrase book, and high quality sun protection and/or bug repellents that may be of use while traveling. These items are often the hardest to find overseas.
