The Division of Global Engagement’s Global Classrooms initiative, launched in winter 2021, endeavors to foster faculty development of a broad portfolio of UCSC courses across all disciplines, to engage students and faculty in global learning. What are Global Classrooms?

Global Classrooms provide an innovative way for UCSC students to gain international experience by leveraging online learning technologies and collaborative, project-based learning. They are derived from existing courses, revised by a UCSC faculty member together with their teaching partner abroad to incorporate the course design methodologies and pedagogical approaches of Virtual Exchange (VE), also known as Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL). Learn more about the COIL course design model.

Global Classrooms will increase UCSC students’ access to global learning by providing them with opportunities to engage and collaborate globally with students at international partner institutions, while also creating opportunities for faculty to strengthen their ties with colleagues and peers abroad, through joint teaching and course development, in support of future scholarly collaborations and potential graduate student recruitment.

As the imperative to collaborate across borders becomes ever more evident, Global Engagement continues to seek innovative strategies to keep the campus community connected and engaged with our partner institutions, student peers, and colleagues around the world.
