UCSC hosts Universidad Autónoma de Baja California delegation to deepen ties and foster cross-border collaboration

A delegation from the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (UABC) visited the University of California, Santa Cruz from Nov. 18-20. The visit, following a UC Santa Cruz faculty delegation to UABC in May, explored opportunities for joint research, educational partnerships, and faculty engagement across various disciplines.

Dr. Dora-Luz Flores Gutiérrez, General Coordinator of Research and Postgraduate Studies led the 10-person UABC delegation. The visit kicked off with a dinner at the Coastal Science Campus hosted by Chancellor Cynthia Larive and Vice Chancellor for Research John MacMillan. Warm opening remarks and engaging conversations over dinner highlighted the institutions’ shared commitment to advancing education, research, and community impact.

“We have made remarkable progress in advancing our relationship over this past year,” said Larive. “It was an honor to host UABC Rector Felipe Cuamea Velazquez in 2023, and we had a productive visit to UABC over summer. Faculty members from both institutions have produced exciting ideas for moving this partnership forward.”

During the three-day visit, faculty from both institutions engaged in discussions to explore opportunities for collaborative research in the fields of climate resilience, agroecology and marine biology, global and community health, and high-tech research and innovation.

“UC Santa Cruz is delighted to welcome our colleagues from Universidad Autónoma de Baja California to our campus. This visit represents an opportunity to explore collaborative partnerships that leverage the strengths of both institutions,” said Assistant Vice Provost of Global Engagement and Senior International Officer Becky George.

The visit showcased the immense potential for collaboration between UC Santa Cruz and UABC. As cross-border connections deepen, visits like these catalyze fostering lasting partnerships that benefit students, faculty, and the global community.

Broadening and deepening institutional partnerships with universities abroad is key to the UC Santa Cruz Strategic Plan for Internationalization.
