A delegation of ten UC Santa Cruz faculty and staff, led by Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Lori Kletzer, traveled to Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán (UADY) in Mérida, Mexico from October 27–30.
The three-day trip followed a delegation visit to UC Santa Cruz in June led by the UADY President, Carlos Alberto Estrada Pinto.
Faculty travel to UADY aligns with UC Santa Cruz’s recent efforts to engage with Mexican universities and to leverage UC Alianza MX funding for faculty research collaborations and undergraduate and graduate student mobility to support partnership development in Mexico.
On day one, faculty from the Divisions of Social Science and Physical and Biological Sciences participated in panels and roundtable discussions around their research, exploring synergies and opportunities with UADY faculty. On day two the UCSC faculty visited research labs and/or sites related to their interests, while CP/EVC Kletzer and UADY leadership met with local government officials.
“Exploring a partnership with UADY reflects our campus commitment to fostering meaningful cross-border collaboration,” said Assistant Vice Provost for Global Engagement and Senior International Officer Becky George.
This visit represents another milestone in UC Santa Cruz’s growing engagement with Mexican universities.
Broadening and deepening institutional partnerships with universities abroad is key to the UC Santa Cruz Strategic Plan for Internationalization.
