To apply for an ISRP internship, you must:
- Be eligible for a J-1 visa
- Be currently enrolled, in good academic standing, and pursuing a degree at an accredited postsecondary institution outside the U.S. (International students currently studying in the U.S. at another university may also be eligible; please email isrp@ucsc.edu to inquire. )
- Intend to return to your home institution’s degree program to obtain a degree after completion of the internship
- Have sufficient financial resources for yourself and any dependents for the duration of your internship in the U.S.
- Be in the U.S. primarily to complete the internship at UC Santa Cruz
- Not graduate while in the U.S. and participating in the internship program
- Not have participated in another student intern program in the U.S. for more than 12 months
- Have demonstrable advanced English language skills sufficient to function in an internship environment, verified by one of the following:
- Minimum score on a recognized language test, taken within the last two years, and submitted as a PDF with the ISRP application:
- TOEFL iBT 80+
- IELTS Academic 6.5+
- Duolingo English Test 115+
- A documented interview with the faculty host
- Documentation from the student’s home institution attesting that instruction and exams are conducted in English
- Minimum score on a recognized language test, taken within the last two years, and submitted as a PDF with the ISRP application:
Note: Meeting all eligibility requirements does not guarantee placement in an internship. Faculty may have limited space in their labs/projects, and intern selection may be competitive. All complete applications will be reviewed by facult,y and selection will be made based on applicant qualifications, motivation, and skills alignment with the selected research project(s). Final decisions regarding internship placement rest with the UC Santa Cruz faculty hosts.
Home University Certification
Following your selection as a student intern and your confirmation of acceptance of your placement, your home institution (faculty or staff academic advisor) will be asked to certify the following as part of your request for the DS-2019:
- The student is in good academic standing, and is currently enrolled in and pursuing a degree program at the home institution.
- The student will return to their home institution to complete their degree following participation in the internship program.
- Participation in the internship will fulfill objectives for the student’s current degree program.
- Participation in the internship is approved by the student’s home institution (faculty or staff academic advisor).
