New staff enhance initiatives, outreach, and support services

The Division of Global Engagement welcomes three staff positions during the winter quarter of 2024.


Chunling Hu joins the division as an International Student Advisor In this role, Chunling will focus on advising and supporting international students.

Chunling brings experience as a college advisor and counselor. She has also been an international student advisor at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, and has considerable experience in Beijing as an EducationUSA Advisor and Cultural Affairs Specialist where she worked with students coming to the U.S. for their studies. She is bilingual in Chinese and English and bicultural with China and the U.S.

“As a newly hired International Student Advisor, I am looking forward to the opportunity to assist students in navigating the challenges and opportunities that come with studying in a new country,” Hu said. “I am thrilled to be part of a community that values and celebrates cultural exchange and international collaboration. I am excited to work alongside dedicated colleagues and engage with a diverse student body in such a vibrant and inclusive academic environment.”


Arturo Torres joins the division as a Global Learning Advisor. In this role, Arturo will focus on general advising for all programs, assist with outreach and recruitment, and oversee our peer advising team. 

Arturo brings experience as an education abroad advisor at Northern Arizona University where he advised prospective students on an array of international academic opportunities. 

I am looking forward to being a part of the Division of Global Engagement and its expansion,” Torres said. “The most exciting thing, I think, is the campus-wide collaboration that is happening and will continue happening, as we all work to elevate UCSC’s internationalization efforts.”


Colin Cole joins the division as the new Partnership and Program Manager,  overseeing the development and facilitation of key partnership initiatives such as Global Classrooms and the International Summer Research Program (ISRP). The role will be focused on faculty and student engagement, and outreach and development of collaborative activities with UCSC’s network of international partners.

Colin brings international education experience to this role, both as a student and educator. Most recently, as a PhD student at Oregon State University, Colin taught courses in Spanish language, co-designed curriculum in language education, and also served as a resident director for an intensive Spanish-language program in Querétaro, México. 

“I am looking forward to working with the Global Engagement team and meeting faculty all across campus. I enjoy working with people and I’m excited to facilitate partnerships and explore opportunities for international collaboration,” said Cole. “I’ve always wanted to be a Banana Slug, and I’m thrilled to be a part of the UCSC community surrounded by trails and redwoods.”
