Global Programming, a relatively new unit within the Division of Global Engagement, is tasked with facilitating international student orientations and programs as well as events for international students and scholars, study abroad students, and the general campus population.
“We are focused on helping students make connections with each other to foster community, find the resources they need, and gain intercultural skills to successfully transition across cultures,” said Lisa Swaim, director of Global Programming.
Recent events include International Education Week (November 18-22); highlights include a well-attended international trivia night and a Chinese name pronunciation workshop for faculty and staff. Global Programming advises the International Mentorship Program which matches new international students with a more experienced UCSC student mentor. The unit also supports Study Abroad students with facilitation of Intercultural Pre-departure orientations.
Students, scholars, and dependents are invited to join in on a variety of events such as International Coffee Hour, kayaking, whale watching, wine tasting, day trips to San Francisco and Monterey, and ventures into downtown Santa Cruz. In partnership with the Graduate Division, we offer a Graduate Preparation Program to prepare incoming and continuing international grad students with English for Academic purposes, academic skills, and intercultural workshops.
