Our extraordinary 2021-2022 Global Mentor team is ready to welcome you to the UCSC international community. Every incoming Frosh will be assigned a mentor so look out for their welcome emails and get connected online such as through our Global Programming Discord server. Global Captains

Our two Global Captains help run the Global Mentorship Program and are experienced leaders in orienting and mentoring new students.

Sandy (she/her/hers)

Major: Psychology and Education | College: Cowell | Hometown: Seoul, Korea

Hey guys! My name is Sandy and I am one of the Global Captains for this year. As a Global Captain, we are here to guide and direct you guys into a smooth transition here at UCSC. I am a fourth-year student majoring in Psychology and Education and I am affiliated with Cowell. I enjoy hanging out with my friends and listening to music in my free time. I am currently the President of KASA (Korean American Student Association). KASA is a social organization to make lots of fun memories and to share the Korean culture and is open to anyone! A fun fact about me is that I have been a part of this program my whole college life! I am very excited to meet all of you guys and make lots of memorable memories at GMP. Major: Biomolecular Engineering and Bioinformatics | College: College Nine | Hometown: Yokohama, Japan

Hi, my name is Sayaka, and I am one of the Global Captains who lead the Global Mentorship Program. I am a third-year international student majoring in Biomolecular Engineering and Bioinformatics and affiliated with College Nine. I love playing the piano, going to the beach, and growing succulents. I serve as a Vice President of the JSA (Japanese Student Organization) which is composed of both Japanese and non-Japanese people. Global Mentors

Anise (she/her/hers)

Major: Business Management Economics | College: Rachel Carson | Hometown: Camarillo, California

Hey everyone, my name is Anise and I have lived in California all my life. I am a second-year student majoring in Ecology and Evolution and affiliated with Rachel Carson College. This is my first year as a Global Mentor! I enjoy running, hiking, listening to live music, and chilling at the beach. During my summer I caught crayfish in Malibu Creek State Park and studied gorilla behavior at the Santa Barbara Zoo. I have also visited 19 National Parks. I am really excited to get to know you all!

Major: Film & Digital Media and Sociology | Kresge College | Hometown: Jakarta, Indonesia

Hey everyone! My name is Bara and I’m a third-year Film and Sociology double major from Jakarta, Indonesia. I am a Kresge affiliate. In my free time, I like to watch movies, TV shows, and basketball, and I’ve been learning how to crochet. I’ve also been getting into more music recently and have been trying to expand my music taste as a whole. This is gonna be my first year as a Global Mentor and I’m looking forward to meeting y’all!

Celeste Zhao (she/her/hers)

Major: Computer Science and Legal Studies | College: Crown | Hometown: Vancouver, Canada & Shenzhen, China

What’s up, everyone? I am Celeste and I am about to be a Junior on our beautiful campus in the fall. I was originally born in China and then moved to Canada with my parents, and I am glad to call these places home because of all the good memories I have had there. What excites me the most is I get to continue my journey in Santa Cruz as I have been enjoying the ocean breeze while pursuing two degrees that I absolutely love. When I am not coding in front of my computer or briefing legal documents, you can catch me hiking in the Santa Cruz mountains or sunbathing on the beach, or perhaps, cooking a feast in my kitchen. In short, I am very thankful for this opportunity to work with everyone and I can not wait to get to know you guys more!

Major: Applied Linguistics I College: Porter I Hometown: San Jose, California

Hey everyone! I’m Dylan and I am one of the Global Mentors for 2021-2022! One of my biggest passions is language, and being able to express that through this position is what excites me the most, I feel. I also enjoy playing video games, and am always willing to talk your ear off about language learning! I also have been to Spain a few times, and miss it dearly (of course). I think that being able to make the world as globally accessible as possible is a mission that is very important to me. It’s so awesome to be here!

Haixiao (Harry) (he/him/his)

Major: Technology Information Management | Merrill College | Hometown: Guangzhou, China

Hello everyone, I’m Harry, an incoming fourth-year TIM major affiliated with Merrill College. I’m originally from Mainland China but have been studying the states since high school. Aside from being an avid fan of motorsport, fashion, and music, I’m also into the act of learning/improving these days so feel free to talk to me about anything finance, career development, gaining skills, getting healthier, etc. This will be my third year working as a Global Mentor and I look forward to connecting with y’all.

Jianxiao (Jason) (he/him/his)

Major: Business Management Economics and Computational Mathematics | College: College Ten | Hometown: Beijing, China

Hello everyone, My name is Jianxiao, you can call me Jason. I am a fourth-year international student from Beijing, China, who studies in BMEC and Mathematics. I am also affiliated with College Ten (Let’s go College Ten!). This is my third year working with the Global Engagement team. Double Major: Sociology and Latin American & Latino Studies | Minor: History of Consciousness | College: Kresge | Hometown: Inglewood, California

Hey y’all, my name is Jeyson and I’m a Senior transfer student majoring in Sociology and LALS with a minor in History of Consciousness. Recently I have been working on completing a funded Senior Thesis research project for Sociology and participating in an Independent Studies course with LALS. Aside from that, I enjoy grooving to music, playing games with friends, picnicking in nature, and cooking Salvadoran cuisine. I have experience as both a Transition Mentor for Transfer students and a Peer Advisor for LALS – so if you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me! Major: Economics combined Mathematics | College: Cowell | Hometown: Guangzhou, China

Hi everybody, my name is Jun and I am an international student from China. I am entering my third year as an Economics combined Mathematics major. I also want to minor in Statistics and Computer Science since they both are so important. In my spare time, I like to play basketball with my friends even though I am not that good at it. I am also a big fan of car modifications. I have modified my car to make it look better. A fun fact about me is that I have won a K-1 speed tournament first prize among my friends. After all, I am super excited to know you all and have a wonderful experience of being part of the GMP family!

Khin Saw (Sabrina) (she/her/hers)

Major: Computer Science | Kresge College | Hometown: Yangon, Myanmar

Hi y’all. My name is Khin Saw but I also go by Sabrina. I’m going to be a Junior this fall. I was born and raised in Yangon, Myanmar. I moved to California for high school and I stayed to attend UCSC. I am a CS (B.S) in UCSC and I am working towards getting a Linguistics Minor as well. I am affiliated with Kresge College. My hobbies include watching movies and TV shows, embroidering, and reading sappy romance novels. This will be my first year working as a Global Mentor and I am super excited to meet all of you!

Hello everyone, my name is Sheng and I am an international student from China. I am a senior student majoring in Computer Engineering, affiliated with Oakes College. Hi, I’m Tony and I’m a fourth-year transfer student majoring in Psychology & Anthropology and I am affiliated with Rachel Carson College. This will be my first year working as a Global Mentor and I look forward to engaging in cultural exchange with everyone in-person (finally)! When I’m not attending zoom university, I’m usually outside backpacking/hiking, relaxing with my dog Kenzie, or watching my pet hermit crabs.

Yupin (Iris) (she/her/hers)

Major: Economics | College: College Nine | Hometown: Taiyuan, China

Hi, everyone. My name is Yupin. You can call me Iris as well. My hometown is in Shanxi Province, northeast of China. I spent my high school years in Tacoma, WA. I’m gonna be a second-year student this fall and so glad that we can go back to school! I am affiliated with College Nine and majoring in Economics. I love traveling, skiing, surfing, reading, and photography. It’s my first year to be a Global Mentor and I would love to make friends with you guys. Zhangjie (Matt) (he/him/his)

Major: Technology Information Management | College: Kresge | Hometown: Shanghai, China

Hey guys, my name is Zhangjie, you can also call me Matt. It’s my second year of being a UCSCer. My major is Technology Information Management. I lived in Kresge for my first year and took a two quarters’ gap period back in China for my sophomore year. During my gap quarters, I had two intern experiences at Tesla and Ernst & Young. I’m a great fan of Pokemon Go. It’s my first time being a Global Mentor, looking forward to working with you all.
