2019 Contest Theme: Defy Imagination

Contest Purpose

  1. To share diverse cultural perspectives through photographs accompanied by short commentaries explaining the photo’s cultural significance to the photographer.
  2. To provide international students and scholars, study abroad students, UCSC alumni, faculty, and staff a creative outlet to share their unique perspectives with the larger campus community.

Contest Eligibility

You may participate in this contest if you are a:

  • Current UCSC International Student (undergraduate or graduate)
  • Current UCSC International Scholar
  • Current UCSC student who is a Study Abroad Returnee or presently on a Study Abroad program
  • Current UCSC faculty or staff
  • UCSC alumni

Contest Rules

  • Each entrant is allowed to submit a maximum of two (2) photos.
  • Photos must be the original work of the person submitting the photo.
  • Photos may be submitted to one of two categories:
    • Photos from abroad (outside the U.S.)
    • Photos from the U.S.
    • Note: You may also submit 1 photo to each category.
  • Photos must meet the contest theme and include a title and a description (not to exceed 150 words) describing the significance of the photo in relation to the theme. This year, the theme is “At Home in the World”; therefore, descriptions must explain how and why the photo is culturally significant to the photographer. How does the photo represent a sense of comfort or of being at home for you? What does it say of your own culture or of another culture you encountered?
  • Photos must not be manipulated in any way. You may not use filters or other photo enhancing/altering programs such as Photoshop.
  • Global Engagement reserves the right to disqualify photos that are deemed inappropriate. Examples of inappropriate photos include drinking alcohol, using illegal substances, nudity, and violence.
  • By submitting the online entry form with your photographs, please know that you are giving the University of California, Santa Cruz permission to use your photographs in its promotional materials and publicity efforts. Your photographs may be used in a publication, print ad, direct-mail piece, electronic media, or other form of promotion.

Winning photographs will be printed and displayed during the International Photo Contest Showcase Reception during Alumni Weekend on April 27, 2019 from 10:30 a.m.-12 noon in Cervantes and Velasquez Conference room. After the Showcase Reception, winning photos will be displayed in the Global Engagement office and on our website.


Voting will take place online via the International Student and Scholars website (

Open submissions: Feb. 19, 2019 to March 24, 2019
Online voting period: April 1 to April 21, 2019 at 11:59pm
Winners Announced on April 23, 2019
Photo Showcase and Reception during Alumni Weekend on April 27, 2019 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon in the Cervantes and Velasquez Conference room.
