Three international students selected to receive Sara Matthews Scholarship

From the estate of Sara E. Matthews, scholarships are awarded annually to international students. Administered by International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS), this scholarship is granted to deserving undergraduate international students of Sophomore or Junior standing at UC Santa Cruz to help with educational costs. 

"There were many strong applicants this year. Three candidates stood out to the scholarship selection committee due to their campus involvement, dedication to sharing and exploring cultures, and impressive academic records. We honor and appreciate the valuable contribution these scholarship awardees make to campus internationalization," Assistant Director of International Student Services, Adrienne Bergenfeld said.

Sara Matthews Scholarships, ranging from $1,000 to $5,000, are awarded during spring term. Eligible students can learn more by visiting the ISSS financing and scholarships webpage.

Elshad Eftekhari - Iran

Major - Human Biology

How will this scholarship help you further your education?

I am so grateful for receiving this scholarship. This scholarship helps lift some of the burden of the financial stress off my shoulders. With this scholarship, I would be able to finish my undergraduate degree in Human Biology.

What are your plans for the future (academically or professionally)?

My goal is to further my education at a medical school in the US. Once I have earned my M.D I want to practice Orthopedic surgery at a residency program in the US. From a young age, It has been my dream to become a surgeon. This scholarship alleviates some of the financial stress that comes with the path to medical school and I am so grateful for this amazing opportunity.


Sam Feng - China

Major - Computer Science: Computer Game Design

How will this scholarship help you further your education?

With this scholarship, I will be able to acquire the hardware I need for exploring different development platforms, and further improve my knowledge and skills as a game developer.

What are your plans for the future (academically or professionally)?

I want to continue learning toward becoming a professional game designer. Work at a large studio for sometimes time to learn about the workflow and the industry, then perhaps start my own game studio to tell the stories I want to tell.

Major - Film and Digital Media

How will this scholarship help you further your education?

This scholarship will definitely help a lot in reducing the financial burden during my study abroad. Which will also help me gain more confidence when planning to organize activities in school and interact with different students around the world. Besides that, it also gives me more chances to explore different courses and programs during each quarter, which will be really helpful during my study life.

What are your plans for the future (academically or professionally)?

I'm still exploring different possibilities for my future either academically or professionally. I hope I can use what I learn from college to find a job that I love to do, and also always stick with my hobby and keep my love to explore different cultures.
